Apple IPhone Sales Surpassing U.S. for First Time

Apple Inc.’s IPhone sales in China may have exceeded the U.S. for the first time in the latest quarter, thanks to brisk demand during the country’s New Year celebrations.

Apple will probably show on Monday that earnings jumped by more than 20 percent when it reports results for the second fiscal quarter, which ended in March. While Apple doesn’t break out shipments by country, the company may have sold 18 million to 20 million iPhones in greater China during the period, while U.S. deliveries were about 14 million to 15 million, according to Creative Strategies LLC.

The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus were both designed with larger screens, which are popular among consumers in China and other countries in Asia. That, along with last week’s rollout of the Apple Watch, underscore the importance of Chinese customers for Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook’s efforts to keep up sales momentum.

“Did they capitalize on the availability of the iPhone 6 on China Mobile fully, and is that proving to be a real driver?” said Alex Gauna, an analyst at JMP Securities LLC, referring to China’s biggest wireless carrier.

Net income is projected to be $12.6 billion on revenue of $56 billion, according to the average of analysts’ estimates compiled by Bloomberg. A key question for investors will be any changes to Apple’s plan to return cash to shareholders. Cook has signaled that the company may increase share buybacks again after boosting repurchases to record levels last year.

Profit is predicted to be $2.16 a share, fueled by a 33 percent rise in iPhone unit sales to 58.1 million, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. At the same time, the stronger dollar may have cut into revenue from iPhones, according to Bloomberg Intelligence data.

Other areas to watch when results are released Monday:

China Sales

This could be the first quarter that Apple sells more iPhones in China than in the U.S., according to Ben Bajarin, an analyst at Creative Strategies LLC.

“Before, there was some strength in Asia and that was people buying for themselves, then you have the phenomenon you have in Chinese New Year, which is when people gift,” Bajarin said. “Our big question is what happens in China for the next few quarters? Are they on par with the U.S. At some point in time, it feels like it is inevitable that every quarter iPhone in China will be bigger than the U.S.”

Cook has said China is poised to overtake the U.S. as Apple’s biggest market at some point, and he’s working to about double the number of stores in China by the middle of 2016. UBS Global Research estimates IPhone demand jumped in the quarter, based on Google search values and historical shipping data.

“Market research firm Kantar noted that iPhone sales reached an all-time high through February, recording a 28 percent share of urban China smartphone sales,” Steven Milunovich, an analyst at UBS, wrote in an April 9 note to investors. “We suspect that 6 Plus interest is higher in China than elsewhere.”

Some analysts had predicted Apple would sell more iPhones in China than in the U.S. in the last three months of 2014. That didn’t happen, even though iPhone unit sales doubled in mainland China, Chief Financial Officer Luca Maestri said in a January interview.

“We have a lot of momentum in China,” Maestri said. “Chinese New Year is a very important part of the cycle in China, and so we hope to take advantage of that.”

Next Quarters

How iPhone sales perform in the current and next quarter -- typically a lull before holiday sales ramp up again and new models are introduced -- is a key question, according to Gene Munster, an analyst at Piper Jaffray Cos.

“The biggest investor questions are around what June and September iPhone units look like as we enter a typically slower period in the iPhone cycle ahead of the fall update,” Munster wrote in a note to investors. If iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are “fundamentally different than prior cycles given the larger screen size, which we believe is true, then market share in June and September could be higher than historical norms.”

Analysts are predicting revenue will climb 25 percent to $46.9 billion in the period ending in June. That would be the biggest third-quarter jump since 2011.

Strong iPhone results in the second quarter are likely to extend Apple’s global market share gains for the third straight quarter, according to an analysis by Bloomberg Intelligence.

Cash Returns

Boosting the company’s capital return program could become an annual April event for Apple. The iPhone maker increased its capital return program to $100 billion in April 2013, including share buybacks and dividends. Then Apple raised it by $30 billion in April last year, adding a dividend increase and 7-for-1 stock split.

While Apple has been praised by activist shareholder Carl Icahn for returning cash, he’s been pushing for more. Cook has already signaled that the company may increase buybacks again after the company’s cash hoard grew by about $23 billion in the December quarter with the introduction of more expensive iPhones. Apple has also raised the equivalent of more than $40 billion in debt in less than two years to help finance dividends and buybacks, letting it return more money to investors without incurring U.S. taxes on foreign profits.

iPad Troubles

The one dark spot for Apple is shrinking tablet sales, which are on track for a fifth straight quarter of declines, by 17 percent to 13.6 million units, according to the average of analysts’ estimates compiled by Bloomberg.

A key question -- although one that probably won’t be addressed this time -- is Apple’s plans for a larger-screen iPad, which could appeal to business users and help breathe new life into sales. Production of a new 12.9-inch screen iPad has been delayed to around September because of difficulties in procuring display panels, people with knowledge of the matter have said.

IPads remain a key opportunity for Apple because the devices can be used for field work and as laptop replacements. Apple announced a partnership last year with International Business Machines Corp. to create mobile software for businesses and for IBM to help sell iPads to corporate customers.

Samsung ' S6 may vault the company back into the top spot

Investors are betting that Samsung Electronics is poised to recoup its title as the world’s top maker of smartphones. For evidence, look no further than the $12 billion increase in the company’s market value since March 1, when it unveiled a pair of new handsets at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The Korean giant is counting on the sixth generation of its flagship Galaxy phone, plus the second edition of the Edge, a phone with a screen that curves along its length, to put it back in the lead after it slipped into a tie with Apple in the fourth quarter. “We expect Samsung to regain its position as the world’s clear No. 1 by volume” in the first quarter of 2015, says Neil Mawston, executive director of Strategy Analytics.

Both Samsung devices have generated positive buzz among reviewers, many of whom panned the Galaxy’s previous iteration. Tech-focused website CNET tags the S6 a “stunner,” while the influential review site Wirecutter deems it the best Android premium handset. “The market, carriers, and even consumers are all on the same page that Samsung’s new phone is different from the past models,” says Keon Han, an analyst at Credit Suisse Group in Seoul.

At an event Samsung staged on April 9, a day before the new Galaxy went on sale in the U.S. and 19 other countries, the head of mobile sales and marketing, Lee Sang Chul, predicted “record sales” and said demand for the pricier Edge model would exceed supply. Samsung will ship 49.8 million S6 phones this year, according to an average of eight analysts recently polled by Bloomberg, which would be an improvement over the performance of the previous model but short of the high-water mark of more than 65 million set by the S3, which was released in 2012.

Samsung said earlier this month that its operating profit for the quarter ended on March 31 will likely slump 31 percent, to 5.9 trillion won ($5.4 billion). Its second-quarter profit, which would include S6 sales for the full three months, may rise to 7.4 trillion won, from 7.2 trillion won a year earlier, according to the average of 24 analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg.

Samsung also faces a test in the U.S., where its market share slipped 7 percentage points, to 21.1 percent, according to Strategy Analytics. Apple, meanwhile, racked up 3 additional points, closing the year at 44.4 percent. Despite the widening gulf, the Korean company has resisted the temptation to underprice its American rival. The websites of Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint all list the price of a Galaxy S6 at $199, when purchased with a two-year service contract, which is on par with the iPhone 6. Lee Min Hee, an analyst at I’M Investment & Securities in Seoul, says he doubts that Samsung’s new handsets can turn the tide in the U.S., at least in the short term. “Many people shifted to Apple’s bigger iPhones late last year, so we can’t expect iPhone fans to switch back to a new Galaxy anytime soon.”

The bottom line: Samsung’s market value has jumped $12 billion since March amid high expectations for its new smartphones.

Google's Inverstments pay off Fueling, Fueling ad volute Gains

Google Inc.’s strategy of stepping up investments to lure more users and advertisers is paying off, fueling ad volume gains in the latest quarter.

“The business is fine -- it’s humming along,” said Shyam Patil, an analyst at Wedbush Securities Inc. “It’s still a very strong solid, business. Nothing has changed and they have some very interesting growth drivers.”

Sales, minus revenue passed to partners, rose 14 percent to $13.9 billion in the first quarter, the company said in a statement Thursday. That compared with analysts’ average projection for $14 billion, according to estimates compiled by Bloomberg.

The shares of Mountain View, California-based Google rose to $577.50 in extended trading from $557.46 at the close in New York. The shares are up 5.1 percent this year.

Deutsche Bank has just been hit with a $2.5 billion fine for manipulating Libor, the interbank lending rate that is linked to trillions of dollars of financial contracts.

As part of the investigation, US regulators trawled through years of chats between U.S. Dollar Libor submitters and traders to show how common manipulation had become.

Today they published some examples of the kind of misconduct they found.

Ebay profit Outlook Tops Estimates

EBay Inc. shares rose after the company said it was on track for a “smooth separation” of its PayPal business in the third quarter and that profit growth was recovering after the company cut costs.

The elimination of 2,400 jobs -- 7 percent of the San Jose, California-based company’s workforce -- pushed first-quarter profits and forecasts above analysts’ estimates. That also helped make up for sluggish sales growth amid intense competition from Amazon.com Inc. and the impact of a stronger dollar, which cut into overseas revenue.

The recovery also blunted concerns that EBay would lose some of its value once it separates from PayPal, which overtook the marketplace business as the leading source of revenue for the first time since its acquisition in 2002. And since the company had previously said it expected to split in the second half of the year, the more precise timeline was seen as good news.

“Without cost cuts, they would have had to take their guidance down at least five cents per share,” said Gil Luria, an analyst at Wedbush Securities Inc. “That’s the major thing driving the stock up, that they were able to keep their guidance for the rest of the year.”

EBay shares gained 3.6 percent to $58.78 at 12:23 p.m. New York time on Thursday. The stock was up 1.1 percent this year through Wednesday’s close.

Profit before certain items in the first three months of 2015 was 77 cents a share, compared with analysts’ average prediction for 70 cents, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. EBay gave a profit outlook of 71 cents to 73 cents for the second quarter, which also topped estimates.

Charting Course

The results also show the Web marketplace is recovering from a security breach that forced users to change passwords and a Google Inc. search change that curbed traffic to the site. The marketplace business drew 157 million shoppers in the latest period.

Net income in the first quarter was $626 million, compared with a loss of $2.33 billion a year earlier, EBay said in a statement Wednesday. Sales rose 4.4 percent to $4.45 billion.

“The marketplaces business has stabilized and is moving toward growth and PayPal is very well positioned for strong growth and a competitive position,” EBay Chief Executive Officer John Donahoe said in an interview with Bloomberg. “You have two independent companies which can each chart their own destinies.”

EBay’s marketplace, an e-commerce pioneer, is facing aggressive competition from Amazon as well as brick-and-mortar retailers developing their own online businesses. Global e-commerce sales will hit $1.59 trillion this year, up 21 percent, according to EMarketer. EBay’s marketplace sales growth has lagged behind that pace so far this year, coming in at 7.3 percent in March, 5.1 percent in February and 6.8 percent in January, according to e-commerce consultant ChannelAdvisor Corp.

Apple Says Being'Bomberded'with Inquiries on Wacth

Apple Inc. is trying to reduce confusion over how customers can purchase its first new device in five years.

The Apple Watch, which officially goes on sale April 24, won’t initially be available for purchase in stores, a break from how the tech company has introduced past products. Instead Apple will continue to accept purchases only online, as it has since pre-orders began earlier this month, according to Angela Ahrendts, senior vice president of retail and online stores.

“We know you’re being bombarded by questions from customers,” Ahrendts said in a company video Tuesday. “Will you have product in the store for purchase on the 24th? This is why last week we announced that due to the high global interest and the initial supply, that we would only be taking orders online right now.”

Ahrendts and Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook are trying change the shopping experience for buyers seeking to get their hands on the smartwatch, which goes on sale in eight countries and Hong Kong later this week. To do that, Apple is departing from its usual practice of flooding stores and courier vans with new products and instead is deliberately changing the buying process for the smartwatch, which has more options for customization than a typical Apple product.

“This is just a very unique situation,” Ahrendts said in the video, which was first reported by French enthusiast website Mac4Ever. “The Watch is an entirely new category. It’s much more personal with all of the different options. We really wanted the customer to work with you so you could guide them, take the time to get the one they wanted and by doing it online we could make sure that we get them the best service and the one they want the most efficiently.”

Blockbuster Launches
Amy Bessette, a spokeswoman for Cupertino, California-based Apple, didn’t respond to a request for comment.

While Apple began taking Web pre-orders on April 10, with deliveries beginning on April 24, shipment times quickly pushed passed that date. Just six hours after Apple’s website began taking orders, the arrival of high-end versions, which can cost as much as $17,000, were delayed until June.

Just eight days after releasing OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 to the public, Apple released a supplemental update today to fix a video driver issue that may have preventing some Macs to boot up properly when specific video capture apps were used.

The update reads:

The OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 Supplemental Update fixes a video driver issue that may prevent your Mac from starting up when running certain apps that capture video.

While most people probably didn’t experience this issue, it is still recommended to update your machine.

OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 was released on April 8, 2015, and besides the usual bug fixes and stability improvements, brought along a few new features such as the new Photos app, new emojis, and more.

The Apple Watch uses Apple's S1 processor, advertised as "an entire computer architecture on a single chip". It also uses a linear actuator called the "Taptic Engine" to provide haptic feedback when an alert or a notification is received. The watch is equipped with a built-in heart rate sensor, which uses both infrared and visible-light LEDs and photodiodes.[12] It is water-resistant with IPX7 rating, so water submersion is not recommended.[13] All versions of the Apple Watch have 8 GB of storage, which allows the user to store up to 2 GB of music and 75 MB of photos, however, this limitation only applies when the Apple Watch is untethered from the user's iPhone; when the Apple Watch is paired with an iPhone all music and photos on that iPhone are available from the Apple Watch.[14] It uses a Flexible Retina AMOLED screen. This is the first Apple product to use AMOLED technology.[15]

The watch is compatible with the iPhone 5 and later running iOS 8.2 or later, connected via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth 4.0.[16]

Apple Watch Design

Apple Watch has three collections, featuring two case sizes: 38 mm (1.5 in) and 42 mm (1.7 in) spread across 38 individual models.[10] The case of the watch includes a mechanism to enable the straps to be interchangeable. Its screen is a pressure-sensitive touchscreen that can distinguish between a tap and a press, and features a digital crown, which can be turned to scroll or zoom and pressed to return to the home screen. The watch also has a button for displaying a list of contacts.[8] The watch is charged by means of inductive charging, using a cable similar to the MagSafe cable from Apple's MacBook family of laptops.[6]

Apple designed a new typeface named San Francisco for the Apple Watch which Apple says is designed for legibility on the device's small display.

WatchKit is a software framework included with the iOS SDK that allows developers to create applications for the Apple Watch, with the option of using the San Francisco typeface as the main typeface for the application.[11].
